What kind of difficulties can we help you with?

Our Clinical Child Psychologists work with the full range of emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties encountered by young people and their families. These tend to relate to one or more of the following aspects:-

Behavioural Health – When a child or young person is often opposing parental requests or authority, perhaps responding aggressively or with an ‘attitude’. Sometimes property is damaged or the child takes property from others; parents feel their child is getting “out of control”.
  • Behaviour issues and parenting help
Emotional Health- Overwhelming feelings which severely interrupt the young person's day to day activities. These might be feelings of great negativity and low self-worth (often described as "depression") or intense fears and anxieties about specific situations or things, for example a fear of school, or speaking in public, or of a particular animal. Children and young people who lose their temper easily or ‘melt down’ are also experiencing difficulties managing their emotions.
  • Anxiety ; panic attacks; phobias including school phobia
  • Stress management
  • Emotional difficulties including anger and low mood
  • Obsessions  and compulsions
  • Psychosomatic issues, stress related pain, such as stomach and headaches
Significant Life Events - difficulties in coping with the after-effects when something really big has happened, like parents getting divorced, bereavement, or trauma such as having been abused or having been in an accident.
  • Post-traumatic stress reactions
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Transitions such as new school, family change, adolescence
Developmental Concerns - the child's acquisition of skills or abilities is different to what would be expected for a young person of a similar age.
  • Self-regulation problems such as difficulties with sleeping and eating
  • Toileting issues, wetting and soiling
  • Addictions including substance misuse
Neurodevelopmental - Difficulties thought to be related to the child's pattern of development. For example a child or young person is having difficulties in the spheres of getting on with others, or is perhaps very obsessive about their interests, or about being clean.  Also the child shows poor attention in situations where other similar children or young people can manage.
  • Social and communication difficulties including autistic spectrum disorder(ASD)

Family Processes - Families at times have difficulties getting on, particularly at times of change and stress. Parents can seek advice from someone outside their situation as to how they, as parents could help their child cope with the change and guidance in behaviour management.
  • Post-adoption (attachment difficulties, experience of previous trauma, relationships)
  • Sexuality issues
  • Relationship Difficulties , family conflict/arguments, sibling
